“The Carrie Diaries” will be premiering January 14, 2013 and breakout actress Ellen Wong will be a central part of the cast.

The 27 year-old Canadian-born actress will be playing the role of Jill Thompson, Carrie’s best friend. Wong’s character is described in the book as loyal and sweet. Wong is also known for her role as Knives Chau in the film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

The series is a prequel to the HBO comedy-drama series “Sex and the City” that followed the lives of four ambitious women and their ever-changing sex lives in New York City. The show developed a cult following for its quirky storyline that delved into promiscuity, gay rights, femininity, and sexuality traced through friendships and relationships.

The cast of the show was no less intriguing. There was the sultry and promiscuous Samantha who taught us a thing or two about seduction, the idealistic romantic Charlotte who was slightly reminiscent of a Stepford wife (albeit, an extremely sweet one), the edgy and social convention-breaking lawyer Miranda, and then there was Carrie.

Most “Sex and the City” fans know Carrie at her New York prime when she resided in a chic brownstone complete with a smashing wardrobe nestled in a walk-in closet. Carrie loved her Louboutins as much as she loved her colorful prints and eccentric dresses that only she could pull off successfully.

However, before there was the glamour girl Carrie who worked as a columnist in the Big Apple, there was Candace Bushnell’s book, The Carrie Diaries, in which Carrie is an aspiring writer growing up in Connecticut. She has talent and is admitted into her father’s prestigious alma mater, Brown University.

Last year, I spent an academic break at Harvard and read The Carrie Diaries on the steps of Kirkland. It’s not exactly for the “Sex and the City” crowd. The book seemed gear towards younger crowd — it was a tad bit boy crazy! But for die-hard Carrie Bradshaw fans, “The Carrie Diaries” as a television series might just help fill the aching void the conclusion of the “Sex and the City” series left behind.

Check out the CW series on January 14 on Citytv and watch for Ellen Wong step into the shoes of Carrie Bradshaw’s 17 year-old BFF!
