Throughout the 18th and 19th century, at the height of slavery in the United States, it was socially intolerable for an African-American man to “talk sweet” to a white woman, let alone think of sharing a romantic relationship with her.

By the 1950’s, interracial relationships emerged but were still rare and widely unaccepted. In the 21st century, it is still common for traditional Chinese parents to forbid their children from choosing a non-Chinese partner. Three years ago, I remember my Indian friend’s grandmother warning her to never even consider bringing a Pakistani boy into their house. Last month, my mom subtly emphasized the importance of marrying someone who was Roman Catholic.

Interracial relationships have come a long way and are now more prevalent than ever before, especially in a city like Vancouver. An increasingly globalized world has resulted in diverse and culturally tolerable societies, where men and women are looking past skin color, religion and race, when choosing their significant other. However, this doesn’t hide the fact that interracial relationships are faced with an additional set of challenges that same-race relationships are not. With the help of interracial and same-race couples alike, we have come up with a list of the pros and cons of being in an interracial relationship.

PROS

Interracial couples were asked what the benefits of being a mixed-race relationship are, what they absolutely love about it and how it makes their relationship better. These were the top answers.

1) It Keeps Things Interesting.

2) Exploring A New Culture With Your Own Personal “Native” Guide.

3) You Gain A Newfound Appreciation For Your Culture.

4) You Develop An Open Mind.

5) It Strengthens Your Relationship.
