This episode starts with a flashback to Jessica’s life when she used to be an office worker. Very obviously not enjoying her job, she resigns, once again, as a result of being bored and overqualified. After saving her best friend Trish from a very forward guy at a bar and buying shots for everybody, present day shows Jessica and Trisha investigating her neighbour Malcolm’s life before and after Kilgrave got a hold of him. After meeting Kilgrave, Malcolm has become a junkie, which is a beneficial cover to Kilgrave as “everybody dismisses a junkie.”
It is still quite difficult for Jessica to see Kilgrave, yet she manages to spot him and Malcolm making a deal at a public park. Wanting to pull him out of this situation, they try to help by following him. Simpson, who has exfiltration experience, accompanies Jessica in her pursuit for Kilgrave that night. They go to a safe house, where there is a decommissioned CDC facility with a hermetically sealed room, which they are planning to use on Kilgrave.
When Jessica gets back to her apartment building, she finds Malcolm in the elevator passed out. She takes him to his apartment, and then gets a call from Hope. She goes to meet Hope at the facility where she is detained and brings her the money she asked for. Not telling her what it’s for, Jessica slides it over, and Hope takes it sort of ungratefully. Jessica then has another flashback to when Trish was showing her a mock-up superhero costume she had made for her, which Jessica refused to wear. This is when Jessica had decided to quit mediocre jobs and become a hero.
Back in present day, Jessica is sitting on her desk facing her apartment door, waiting for Malcolm to leave his apartment. Once he does, Jessica follows him. Exiting the building, she gets into a van where Trish and Simpson are waiting for her in their espionage gear. Jessica and Simpson exit the van and follow Malcolm to his meeting with Kilgrave at the public park, and keep them in sight as they make their deal. Simpson starts walking up to where Malcolm and Kilgrave are sitting, ready to shoot Kilgrave with a dart gun equipped with Sufentanil to take him down. As Simpson gets closer to him, a girl pops her balloon near Simpson, which captures Kilgrave’s attention. Afraid that he will see Simpson holding the gun, Jessica gets Kilgrave’s attention by calling him a “shithead.” Simpson then takes the opportunity and shoots him in the neck, and Kilgrave goes down. Jessica places his limp body over her shoulder and into the back of the van, where she spits in his face and punches him while he is unconscious. Trish drives them to the CDC facility, but it turns out Kilgrave had a tracker in his jacket and they are being followed.
One of Kilgrave’s cronies breaks Trish’s window and electrocutes her, while another starts fighting and electrocuting Simpson. A couple go for Jessica, but she easily takes them out, and a few others attempt to electrocute her. While they pin her to the ground, two bodyguards take Kilgrave out of the van and into their vehicle and drive away. Jessica and Simpson manage to capture one of the bodyguards while he is unconscious, however he is unable to give them any information. They let him off the hook, and Jessica reassures Simpson that she will find Kilgrave.
Walking back to her apartment, Jessica hears shouting coming from Malcolm’s open door. She sees him talking to an angry lady who is asking for her money. Malcolm desperately begs her to give him drugs, but she is adamant to not hand them over and pulls a gun on him. Jessica comes in to take the gun away from her and pushes her out of the apartment. Jessica pushes Malcolm back on his couch, but he says “you can’t save me again” while struggling to breathe. This triggers Jessica to have another flashback, this time to when she first saved Malcolm from being mugged. This was also the first time she met Kilgrave. Kilgrave calls for her forth and asks her personal questions, and then beckons her to have dinner together, with his power.
Jessica takes Malcolm to her apartment, and handcuffs him to her toilet. He confesses to taking pictures of her daily for Kilgrave, for which he received drugs in return. Even though Jessica tells him he was being manipulated through both his powers and the drugs, he still blames himself stating that he had a choice. To this, Jessica tells him how Kilgrave also manipulated her at one point, and that she still struggles to escape his manipulation. She then says to him “If you give up, I lose…He did this to you to get at me,” indicating that he just wants to take another victim under her name. Jessica begins to get even harsher than usual at this point, and yells at Malcolm to not be the “self-pitying piece of shit” that Kilgrave has turned him into, and to help save her as she has done for him many times before, angrily slamming some drugs for him at his feet.
That same night, a group of women at Hope’s correctional facility quietly sneak into her cell, wake her up, and start beating her. The morning after, Kilgrave wakes up in his bedroom, bleeding from the mouth. He takes out a bloody tooth, grinning from ear to ear. He then calls Jessica’s phone, asking why she wants him alive. He then tells her that he will leave Malcolm alone if she does his job for her and sends him pictures of her every day— “Send the picture, save the junkie.” Unresponsive, she hangs the phone and scoffs when he immediately sends her a text saying “I’m waiting.” Jessica then walks into her bathroom, and sees that Malcolm has chosen to throw the drugs in the toilet rather than take them. Grateful for his action, she takes a selfie and sends it to Kilgrave.
This episode was great to see Malcolm’s involvement with both Kilgrave and Jessica, as we got to find out more about his past and purpose in the story, as well as getting to see both sides of Jessica’s compassion toward Malcolm and her anger and resentment toward Kilgrave. We also got to see some more of Jessica and Kilgrave’s past together, however the depth of their relationship remains a mystery. It leaves us wondering how strong Kilgrave’s mind manipulating powers truly are, as such a resilient person as Jessica still feels their effect, even after being able to escape them.
